In March, we began Phase 1 of the willow maze regeneration project, which involved cutting the willow walls down to ground level. The willow’s uncontrolled growth had made it very difficult to maintain, and to get around – so the plan is start again.
With all the above-ground growth cleared, we were able to map the maze layout, and identify where gaps need to be filled. Later in the year, willow stakes from the recent coppice work will be hammered into the ground so that the new regrowth can be woven around them. This should result in denser maze walls that will be kept at about four feet in height (still high enough to be an adventure for small children), which will be much easier to maintain.
